The Dancing Devils: So this card is about how worldly things might be holding you back. So here's a look at all the bosses with tarot and imagery stuff in mind. I like to think that all of the bosses are representing progression in the journey, and progress in overcoming depression.
The Fool's Journey is about growth as a person. I've picked up learning tarot cards solely from this game so I'm really new to it all, but someone on this sub ( u/Ammers10 ) has a really neat and extensive look at the cards in SWH that's explanatory even if you don't know anything about tarot cards, here it is: The game takes you through something called "The Fool's Journey" which I honestly don't know a lot about. A whole bunch of stuff uses tarot cards for no reason other than aesthetic, (see JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, The Binding of Isaac, and maybe? Persona? I've'nt played Persona so I don't really know how they use the tarot cards, regardless, if Simogo just used the tarot cards as a part of SWH's endless about of aesthetic, then this whole theory crumbles, but here we go, looking at the game's use of tarot cards as intentional, here's what I got: SWH uses all of the major tarot cards, and this definitely gets problematic for interpreting the story.
I really recommend the video, it's great!) (As a side note, Mathew Dyason's video about SWH on Game Score Fanfare does a great job at explaining how The Fool being a blank slate is good for Simogo's goal of making a "pop album game" and how the whole game is intentionally vague to be more pop-like. I genuinely think Simogo mean that The Fool went through depression and her heart became numb to love, that her heart "broke" in the sense that she doesn't love anymore. There's a whole lot of heartbreak and stuff that the game refers to, but I would like to note that "heartbreak" doesn't necessarily mean a failed relationship. One of the only characteristics we're told about her is that she went through spirals of anger and sadness.
The protagonist, who I'll be calling The Fool, is an pretty blank slate of a character. Sayonara Wild Hearts is a game about depression. That being said, in my many play throughs trying to beat yolo arcade (unsuccessfully) I've come to develop this interpretation based on my own ideas as well as other people's interpretations. So as a preface, this is speculation, I'm very aware that a lot of this is probably just nothing and Simogo could've just made a cool game that means nothing but here's to me and my tin hat.
